Professional Development Requirements for Rhode Island Teachers

The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) requires teachers to complete Professional Learning Units (PLUs) to renew Initial, Professional, or Advanced certificates. The number of PLUs required depends on your certificate type and expiration year.

General PLU Requirements

  • Initial Certificate (3 years): Requires completion of 90 PLUs to advance to a Professional Certificate
  • Professional Certificate (5 years): Between 75–100 PLUs, based on expiration year
  • Advanced Certificate (7 years): Also requires 100 PLUs, plus an aspirational benchmark (e.g., NBCT or advanced degree)

Starting in 2030, all renewals for Professional and Advanced certificates will require 100 PLUs.
