Professional Development Requirements for Maryland Educators
To keep your credentials active, educators must earn 90 professional development points (PDPs) that align with an Individualized Professional Development Plan (IPDP).
Certain licensure areas have additional renewal requirements that can be earned as part of the 90 PDPs:
- Blind/Visually Impaired: Minimum 15 PDPs in braille maintenance.
- School Counselor: One semester hour, MSDE-approved CPD credit, or equivalent CEUs covering depression, trauma, violence, youth suicide, substance abuse, and best practices for helping students in crisis.
- Administrator I/II: Professional learning focused on teacher retention and leadership development.
Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, Generic Special Education (all grades), and ESOL: Beginning July 1, 2025, educators must demonstrate proficiency in scientific reading instruction by either passing an MSDE-approved
