A happy and productive day at school starts with a well-balanced diet at home. It’s never too early to start teaching children just how important it is to take care of their bodies. However, young children might have difficulty understanding why they can’t have cookies for breakfast. Use these three lesson ideas to help kids learn more about nutrition.
- Teach the food groups. One of the best places to begin when introducing kids to the idea of a balanced diet is to start with the importance of variety. Use visual aids to teach children about the major food groups (vegetables, dairy, starches, protein, and fruit) and ask the class to name their favorite food in each group. Courses that focus on professional development hours in Harrisburg can teach you more ways to get your classroom engaged with each of the major food groups.
- Play restaurant. Kids love to use their imaginations and play pretend. After you’ve gone over the five food groups, challenge each of your students to design a healthy and well-balanced menu for a restaurant that they create. Allow them to choose the name and theme of their restaurant and ask them to list foods that will be featured on the menu.
- Brainstorm other ways to take care of your health. When it comes to body health, nutrition is just the beginning. Ask kids to brainstorm other ways they can take care of their bodies beyond the kitchen. From getting daily exercise to sleeping for at least 8 hours a night, show kids that there are plenty of ways to take care of your health.
