Professional Development Requirements for Alaska Teachers
To renew or reinstate a regular five-year Alaska teaching certificate, educators must earn six renewal credits, which can be completed through multiple approved options. Each of the following equals one renewal credit:
- One semester hour of credit from a regionally or nationally accredited college or university
- One and a half quarter hours of college credit from an accredited institution
- One continuing education unit (CEU) with at least 15 contact hours from an approved provider
- One micro-credential with at least 15 contact hours from an approved provider
- 15 hours of non-academic credit, with a pre-approval form submitted to the Alaska Department of Education
Renewal credits must be:
- Related to your current teaching position if it requires certification, or
- Related to at least one of your endorsement areas, or
- A required element of a program leading to a new endorsement you are actively pursuing
