Writer’s Workshop

Prerequisites

  • Basic computer file management knowledge (e.g., opening, saving, uploading files, creating folders).

Materials

  1. Internet access.
  2. Adobe Acrobat 11.01 or later.
  3. Any word processing program.

Professional Learning Objectives

  • Complete a choice writing piece, reflecting on creating the best conditions for students to excel in writing.
  • Plan and design the structure of a Writer’s Workshop, considering scheduling, physical space, and a positive work environment for students.
  • Use mentor texts to create three targeted writing skills and explain how these activities will develop these skills.
  • Analyze the factors that inspire successful authors and apply them to your classroom.
  • Research a published author and explore the factors that influence their writing.
  • Create three custom mini-lessons focused on the writing process (pre-write, draft, revise, edit, and publish).
  • Analyze conferencing strategies used by teaching professionals to support and develop student writing.
  • Respond to questions regarding the effective use of tools in the Writer’s Workshop.
  • Create three skills-based writing activities and complete an Activity Grid to organize them.
