It’s plain and simple: We educate our students to prepare them for the world. Yet, the school system is under national scrutiny as our students continue to score lower than our global competitors. Colleges claim that incoming freshmen require more remediation than ever, and the high-tech jobs are being given to qualified candidates from other countries. In response, the nation looks to the education system as the culprit and starts enacting reforms. As a result, our teachers and students are stretched thin with the growing amount of curriculum requirements and incessant standardized testing. It’s a recipe for burnout for teachers that genuinely want to help students achieve. Let’s take a step back from all the latest trends in education and get back to the basics: What do our students need for success? What basic skills do they need to excel in their post-secondary life choices? Preparing our students for success means helping them develop resiliency, independence and determination. They also need to be creative thinkers, problem solvers and be able to work well with others. Many students do not possess these skills naturally, which means they need to practice. Does your curriculum address these skills through activities and experiences? If your answer is sometimes, rarely or never, no worries!
College and Career Readiness will provide teachers with plenty of ideas to design activities that allow your students to practice much needed soft skills, while learning the required curriculum content.
Some of the projects include:
- Lesson Plan Reality Check – In this project, teachers get to review some of their lessons and use ideas from the course to a few enhancements.
- Resume and Reflection – Resume writing involves critical thinking skills and creative writing skills. This project will allow teachers to spend time updating their resumes. (Not that they are looking for another job or anything!)
- Speaking and Listening Skills Activity – I’m thinking all students and some teachers (including me) could probably brush up on speaking and listening skills. By practicing mock interviews for dream jobs, students learn the importance of communication and get to apply the learning. For this project, teachers learn how to design an effective Speaking and Listening lesson for almost any grade level.
Other projects and activities in this course:
- Create a Prezi presentation for your own business.
- Learn how the Stock Market works and how to design and activity for your students.
- Discover 21st century careers like: Paleo-Veterinarian, Commercial Space Pilot or Printer for Human Organs and Body Parts.
There are so many interesting things to learn in College and Career Readiness that teachers might forget they are earning professional development! Teachers earn 18 hours of professional development and receive resources, materials, lesson ideas and a new perspective on what students actually need to prepare for life after school.
