New Course: AI in ED (Artificial Intelligence in Education)
Yikes! Is anyone else nervous about AI taking over? What is AI capable of (besides producing perfectly written homework for my students?) Do we really need more tech? Will teachers become obsolete? What is it exactly and how does it work?
If you are curious about AI (Artificial Intelligence) and how it will affect our world, you are not alone.
AI has actually been around for quite a while and has really become part of our everyday lives during the past decade or so. Alexa and Siri are forms of AI. Navigation systems as well as many gaming apps you may have on your phone are also forms of AI. When you shop online and you see things you liked (or discussed) show up on a social feed like Pinterest or Facebook, you guessed it, AI.
Artificial Intelligence was developed in the 80s by Dr. Hinton who created a new technology he called, neural networks. Neural Networks can learn without human intervention. This type of technology has morphed into tech that we use every day and is poised to become even more powerful in the very near future. So alarming in fact that major figures in government and the tech industries are calling for a pause in releasing this type of tech to the public without proper understanding and regulation.
Even if you do not need professional development hours, this course is full of valuable information about this new technology that will be infiltrating much of our lives. Since we (teachers) probably won’t have much say when this tech comes knocking at our classroom doors, best to learn as much as we can about it now, so our students can be aware of the dangers and reap the benefits. By the way, this was written by a human…
Here is a clip from, AI in ED (Artificial Intelligence in Education) Tools for Teachers section:
As we learned in the previous sections, AI programs like ChatGPT can produce human-like essays, artwork, photographs, and memes. As in the past, students are ahead of us in this technology and have been using ChatGPT to generate debates and essays and quickly search for exam answers. So why should schools even allow ChatGPT programs to run on student computers? Some districts argue that with correct education and implementation of AI, the benefits outweigh the risks. That is a decision best left up to administration. So, while they contemplate the pros and cons of AI, let’s arm ourselves with the knowledge of AI and how it can assist you in the classroom.
First, AI is most likely already being used in your classroom to differentiate learning for your students. Adaptive learning programs such as The Class Dojo, Grammarly, Duolingo, Xtra Math, and most interactive text books use AI technology to assess the learning level of students and progress accordingly.
Similarly, you have probably used AI when troubleshooting tech issues with your learning management systems like Blackboard or Canvas. Ever use the chat feature for support? You were talking to a bot! And if it wasn’t frustrating you, it was a successful AI program. Have you made a playlist for your students and somehow, based on the music you chose, the program makes a great suggestion? Again, that was AI.
AI Tools that are NOT ChaptGPT
Although ChatGPT is getting much of the AI spotlight, artificial intelligence is helping educators design programs that will genuinely enhance your teaching experience. I’ve curated a few of my favorite programs, but please know there are a LOT of others out there!
