How do I earn act 48 hours to maintain my professional teaching license?
Once teachers become certified by the state, their 5-year licensing renewal period begins. All PA teachers need to earn 180 Act 48 hours every 5 years. Act 48 hours can be earned in many different ways. Teachers can take college courses, participate in approved school activities or take online courses through approved providers.
The Teacher’s Academy offers a wide variety of teacher-created, Act 48 approved coursework. The courses range from 3 to 18 hours and include topics such as: wellness, empathy and applying technology and implementing strategies that work. Many of the projects in the courses can be customized so teachers can create lessons and activities that they will be able to use in their classrooms right away. All courses offered by The Teacher’s Academy are Act 48 Approved!
The PA Department of Education extended teacher’s professional license renewal period by one year and is set to expire this July, 2023. Teachers can check to see how many hours they need by entering their professional personal identification number into PERMs:

18-Hour Act 48 Credit Course: Move to Learn
Spring is in the air! Move to Learn will get students (and teachers) feeling rejuvenated as they wind down the school year. Enjoy!
18 Hours: Move to Learn
It’s no secret that schools cut gym and recess to increase classroom instruction time. When gym class is no longer an option for our students, teachers can bring movement into the classroom. Moving around not only revitalizes stagnant muscles but also triggers brain power. Explore how to improve your student’s health, wellness and test scores with Move to Learn!

Did you know that kids (anyone under the age of 17) need one hour of intense aerobic exercise every day? Does your school provide that opportunity? Most likely, it doesn’t! Thanks to latest in brain research, neuro-scientists agree that exercise has a greater impact on the brain than it does on the body. It’s time to let our schools know!
This course will walk teachers through the overwhelming scientific evidence that proves physical activity is the key to health and wellness, improved behavior and academic performance. Teachers will conduct their own exercise and memory experiment, meet the top researchers in the field of neuroscience, review the best online resources, use evidence-based research to write a proposal to our administrators requesting more physical activity and finally, implement what we learned to revamp an old lesson to include exercise and movement. So, grab your sneakers and water bottle. It’s time to sweat-out your 18 hours of professional development!
