How Teachers are Using the Olympics in their classes
If you’re like me, February brings a cold, slow, slog that makes the short days feel long while we are all cooped up inside! Nothing like a little Olympics to get the students (and me) motivated again. Here are a few fun lessons f
rom our teachers that we put together for a quick, low-prep, easily integrated into any lesson. Let’s train hard and go for the gold!
Olympics Themed Lesson #1: Speed Skating
Ideal for any type of lesson from introducing new concepts to a review! Move some furniture and power through your review!

Olympics Themed Lesson #2: Biathlon
What’s better than a review game? A review game with a physical challenge! Pick your favorite challenge and incorporate your plan. Easy-peesy.

Olympics Themed Lesson #3: Ice Hockey!
Kids love the penalty box feature of this one… You can use it for interrupting during a debate, taking too long to answer, or any other skill you want to hone.
Olympics Themed Lesson #4: Curling
Any type of problem-solving skill that they can partner with you can use for this fun Olympic lesson. And if they complain that someone is cheating, you can simply say… “I didn’t see anything!”
Olympics Themed Lesson #5: Snowboard
This is my personal favorite (to watch AND to teach!). Each station is a trick. Bonus points for naming them appropriately. You know, the Nose Grab, Tail Grab, Method Air, Indy Grab, Stalefish, Air to Fakie, Backside 180, Cork or Rodeo to name a few!
Olympics Themed Lesson #6: Bobsled Relay
Take the desks out of the room and put the students in chairs, single-file. Then post a question and have the teams agree before moving on. This is the essential team-building sport!
Olympics Themed Lesson #7: Design your own sport
Take on a STEAM challenge by having the students design their own sport, or a spin-off of a classic. How about Zero-Gravity Curling or Underwater Corn Hole! (Don’t even try to take that from the US!)
Have fun out there teachers, stay warm and keep them actively learning!
